A Surrey high school is hoping this spooky season will double as giving season, as it looks to collect food bank items for its community.

Clayton Heights Secondary has been doing the “Halloween for Hunger” event for the last 14 years, where they try to fill a truck full of donations.

The organizer and teacher at the school, Sarah Daintrey says all the donations go to people in need living in the area.

“There’s a huge need in our community, especially with COVID. Some people have been out of work and have not been able to feed their families properly so we donate all the canned food goods to the Cloverdale Community Food Bank, which goes out into our local community, and feeds people within our community,” she said.

“So it’s a really cool fundraiser — the fact that this stuff comes from the community, and stays within the community.”

Daintrey says the food bank has requested some special items in particular.

“The Cloverdale Community Kitchen did put a call out a little while ago, saying that they’re running low on a lot of their protein supplies, and diapers, and things like that for little kids. So we’re hoping to pick up those kinds of items as well,” she said.

She says they’re aiming to collect thousands of food bank items for the community organization, as students will also be handing donation bags out door to door.

“There’s a large truck that comes from the Cloverdale Community Kitchen, and we’re trying to fill it. Last year we had about 4,000 items, and we’re hoping to get closer to 5,000 or 6,000 this year, to fill up the truck.”

The truck will be parked in the Clayton Heights Secondary parking lot on Oct. 29 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. where folks can stop by and drop off donations.
